In what it could be a shocker, the US is facing a severe problem of lack of medicines needed to treat the patients those who were placed on the ventilators are also short in supply.
The medicines include more than a dozen sedatives, anesthetics, painkillers, and muscle relaxants, and the shortages raise the possibility that it could become more difficult for health care providers to place these patients on ventilators.
Though there was a sharp rise in the demand for the sedatives and anesthetics propofol, dexmedetomidine, etomidate, ketamine, lorazepam, and midazolam by 51% the US failed to meet the medical needs, in turn, making the patients suffer severely.
"What we are seeing now is some products that are in a shortage and others that are in a very tight market," said Dan Kistner, a group senior vice president for pharmacy solutions at Vizient on the scarcity of equipment.
