After coming to power, the YSRCP led by YS Jagan Mohan Reddy left its mark in governance and brought flagship schemes. The Volunteer system was also brought and for the first time, a state proposed a system so that the services can be used for the betterment of users.
Volunteers came in handy when Covid hit us. They did a door-to-door survey and gathered information about the infected people and people who came to the state newly. Based on that they were given medication and medicines. At the Village and Ward Secretariats, they take care of various things.
But the other side of the Volunteer system is that they brought a bad image to the government. A few volunteers escaped with pension money and there are allegations that Volunteers are demanding money from people to get services or get their work done.
As another big headache, a volunteer was arrested in Andhra Pradesh for allegedly supplying illegal liquor. Based on the information, a volunteer was arrested along with desi liquor. Two liters of liquor were reportedly seized from him by the concerned authorities.
One Ramu who is working as a volunteer was arrested by the SEB authorities on the 27th of last month. He was produced before a court and he was slapped with a remand of 14 days. Following this, he was removed from the position.
The elections are fast approaching and the volunteers cannot be used in election work as the Court said earlier. Moreover, there is already a bad image of volunteers and such incidents only increase the bad image. If the volunteer system is not addressed at the earliest it might impact YCP.
