As the confrontation between the Centre and the microblogging site Twitter continues, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology has come down severely on the social media platform.
Two representatives have appeared before the committee, who were grilled for more than one and a half hour by the committee led by Congress party's Shashi Tharoor.
The committee expressed its concerns over the rights of the people on the social media and reportedly asked Twitter to comply with the new IT rules introduced by the Centre
During the questioning, the committee reportedly asked whether the rules of the company are above the rules of the land. Company rules are equally important for us, the representatives have reportedly answered.
The grilling took place a week after the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology had slapped notices to Twitter in connection with the protection of the rights of the citizen.
Replying to a question on what basis Twitter tags tweets as manipulated tweets, the representatives said the tweets which appear not good for the society will be tagged.
After the meeting, Twitter issued a statement and expressed his happiness of grabbing the opportunity to appear before the committee over safeguarding the rights of the citizens.
"We appreciate the opportunity to share our views before the Standing Committee on Information Technology. Twitter stands prepared to work with the committee on the important work of safeguarding citizens' rights online in line with our principles of transparency, freedom of expression, and privacy. We will also continue working alongside the Indian government as part of our shared commitment to serve and protect the public conversation," Twitter said in a statement.
