Tragic Shooting Claims Lives of Father and Daughter in Virginia

In a heartbreaking incident in Accomack County, Virginia, a 24-year-old Indian woman, Urmi Patel, and her father, 56-year-old Pradeep Patel, were fatally shot at a department store where they were employed. The tragedy unfolded on Thursday morning shortly after the establishment had opened for business. George Frazier Devon Wharton, 44, was apprehended and faces charges of first-degree murder, among other felonies and firearms-related crimes. Reports indicate that Wharton entered the store that morning intending to buy alcohol and inquired aggressively about the store's closure the previous evening before he commenced shooting, leading to the immediate death of Pradeep and later, Urmi succumbing to her injuries in the hospital.

The Patels, hailing from Mehsana district in Gujarat, India, had immigrated to the United States six years prior, seeking a better life. They were working in the convenience store owned by Paresh Patel, a relative. Overwhelmed by the events, Paresh recounted to WAVY TV in Virginia, "My cousin's wife and her dad were working this morning. Some guy came here and just shot. I don't know what to do." The family, consisting of Pradeep, his wife Hansaben, and their daughter Urmi, were known to be hardworking and dedicated to their new life in the US. Pradeep and Hansaben have two other daughters, one living in Canada and the other in Ahmedabad, India.

This incident has plunged the Patel family into mourning, with relatives in India expressing their devastation. Chandu Patel, Pradeep's uncle, revealed their anguish upon hearing the news, stating, "We spoke to his daughter, and she told us everything." The news of the killings spread through news reports and a viral video, shocking the family and the wider community. This act of violence has reverberated through the Indian community in the U.S., especially as it follows another recent tragedy where Mainank Patel, a 36-year-old Indian-origin store owner, was killed in a robbery in North Carolina.
