It is already known that several global companies have started to fire employees at a very aggravated pace in the recent months. Now this clarified by ChatGPT chief and AI revolutionist, Sam Altman as he spoke about AI washing and its consequences.

Many companies today are quietly reducing their workforce and presenting it as an AI driven transformation. This trend is increasingly being called AI washing.

AI washing happens when a company claims that artificial intelligence is the main reason for layoffs, restructuring, or cost cutting, even when the real motive may simply be to reduce expenses or improve short term profits.

By framing job cuts as part of an inevitable AI revolution, companies shift the narrative. Instead of saying “we are downsizing to save money,” they say “AI is automating these roles.” It sounds innovative rather than harsh.

In some cases, AI truly is changing workflows. Tools that automate customer support, data entry, content generation, or coding assistance are reducing the need for certain repetitive roles. But critics argue that not every layoff labeled as AI driven is actually caused by AI.

Sometimes companies use the AI story to please investors, boost stock prices, or signal that they are modern and future ready.

This creates fear in the workforce. Employees feel replaced by machines even when the technology may not fully justify the cuts. It also raises ethical questions about transparency and corporate responsibility.

AI washing reflects a larger shift in how technology narratives are being used in business strategy. The real debate is not just about AI replacing jobs, but about how honestly companies communicate change.
