One of the commonly registered police cases against the international population in the United States is the drunk under influence (DUI). Several Indian students are often caught in drunk driving cases in the United States and this leads to consequences.

However, it has now reached a point where a simple DUI case can now lead to possible deportation, not just for the temporary Visa holders, but also for the green card holders.

A new bill introduced in the U.S. Congress, H.R. 875 – The Jeremy’s Law, is creating serious concern among immigrants, especially Green Card holders and visa workers. The bill proposes that any immigrant convicted of drunk driving (DUI) could face deportation, regardless of how long they have lived in the U.S. or their family ties.

The bill is named after Jeremy, a young American boy who was killed by a drunk driver who happened to be an immigrant. Lawmakers behind the proposal argue that this law is necessary to prevent such tragedies and to hold immigrants more accountable for dangerous behavior.

If passed, the law will treat DUI offenses more strictly for immigrants than for U.S. citizens. Even a single conviction could lead to revocation of permanent residency or visas, forcing many to leave the country.

This move has alarmed thousands of Indians and other immigrant communities, as DUI cases are common traffic violations in the U.S. Immigration attorneys are warning residents to be extra careful, since the consequences under this bill could be life-changing and severe.
