It is already known that the Australian authorities have started to crack down on Indian population by imposing restrictions on Visa policy. In fact, several Australian universities have even started to cut down on the student intake from Indian states.

In this context, the Republic Day celebrations organised by members of the Indian community in Australia have triggered a heated debate on social media, after videos from the event went viral online.

The visuals showed Indian nationals participating in a public parade, waving the tricolour, playing drums and performing cultural acts to mark India’s Republic Day on January 26.

While many praised the event as a proud display of Indian culture abroad, a section of social media users strongly objected to it. Critics questioned the need to celebrate another country’s national day so publicly on Australian soil.

Some argued that such celebrations should be restricted to private venues or community halls, rather than public streets. A few even went on to say that if people felt so strongly about Indian patriotism, they should celebrate the occasion in India itself.

However, the backlash was met with equal resistance. Supporters defended the celebrations, pointing out that Australia is a multicultural country where migrant communities regularly celebrate their traditions and festivals openly. They argued that expressing cultural identity does not undermine loyalty to the host nation and is a common practice among diaspora communities worldwide.

The debate gained further traction as January 26 also marks Australia Day, adding another layer to the discussion. The incident has once again highlighted the growing conversations around migration, identity and cultural expression in Australia, especially as the Indian diaspora continues to expand and become more visible in public spaces.
