Which way will North Telangana swing this time?

Which way will the crucial North Telangana go in the upcoming elections? This question has gained importance as the BRS success story is essentially a north Telangana phenomenon. At the same time, all but one MP seats that the BJP had won in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections too are from the North Telangana region. The Congress too is pinning its hopes on North Telangana this time. Hence, the trends in North Telangana have assumed significance.

The undivided districts of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Nizamabad constitute the North Telangana and account for 54 seats. In the 2014 elections, the BRS, then TRS, had won 45 of the 54 seats. In the 2018 elections too, of the 88 seats that the BRS had won, 47 were from the North Telangana region. However, a year later, the BJP had won Nizamabad, Adilabad and Karimnagar Lok Sabha seats from the region.

The Congress party had won five and six seats respectively in the 2014 and 2018 assembly elections in North Telangana. The Congress, which has traditionally maintained dominance in the South Telangana comprising Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy and parts of Medak, needs to win at least 25 seats in the North Telangana if it wants to come to power.

The BJP too is pinning its hopes on the North Telangana region. The party is mainly focusing on Ramagundam, Huzurabad, Choppadandi, Korutla, Nizamabad, Boath, Nirmal, Adilabad, Karimnagar and Vemulawada assembly constituencies this time. Which way will the North Telangana region swing as assumed great salience this time as it can decide the winner in 2023.
