The President of United States, Donald Trump is back in the news after imposing 50% tariffs on the Indian economy due to the prevailing oil trade with Russia. The United States has decided to increase tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, starting from August 27, 2025.
President Donald Trump announced this move as a punishment for India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. Earlier, Indian exports already faced a 25 percent tariff, but now an extra 25 percent has been added, doubling the burden.
The U.S. says that India’s oil trade with Russia indirectly helps Moscow in its war against Ukraine, and therefore, it is being treated as a national security issue.
Andhra Pradesh depends heavily on exports to the U.S., especially in sectors like shrimp, seafood, textiles, granite, and tobacco. The state is India’s largest exporter of shrimp, with thousands of farmers and workers depending on the aquaculture industry.
With the steep tariff, American buyers may cut down their imports, causing a drop in demand. This could lead to falling prices, financial losses for farmers, and even job cuts in coastal districts such as Nellore, Prakasam, East and West Godavari.
Similarly, Andhra’s granite and textile industries, which send a large portion of their products to the U.S., will also suffer. Many small and medium enterprises in the state rely on American markets, and the higher tariffs will make their goods less competitive
