The United States immigration has been a major cause of concern in times, and this is reaching a new high point almost every single day with the latest method of operations. Now the biometric system that has been introduced in the OPT F1 process processing could lead to further delay.
Recently, many international students applying for F-1 OPT STEM extensions were surprised to receive biometrics appointment notices from USCIS, a step that hasn’t typically been part of the OPT extension process.
Students who filed their applications in mid-January started getting these notices, leaving many confused and concerned about what to do next.
Biometrics which include fingerprints and updated photos are now being requested because of a new USCIS policy introduced in December 2025 that aims to strengthen identity verification and reduce fraud.
Previously, USCIS usually did not require biometrics for OPT or STEM OPT extension applications, so this change came unexpectedly for students.
If you receive a notice, you must attend the appointment at the assigned Application Support Center with your notice, valid ID, and updated passport photos. Missing this appointment could delay your extension approval or even put your status at risk.
STEM OPT extensions already take several months to process, and adding biometrics means many students now face longer waits and more uncertainty, especially those nearing the end of their current work authorization. While the policy’s goal is to increase security, it has increased stress for many who are trying to stay employed and maintain their status in the U.S.
