India is dubbed as a soft power given its significance. There is another aspect of India as we are the largest Democracy in the world. Democracy means a system to govern the state and the members of the system are elected by people through elections. There are only a few democratic nations in the world and India stands tall among them.

An ironic fact is that despite being the largest democracy, less vote percentage is recorded in the elections no matter where the elections are held. There are no rules in the country that say people should cast their votes which makes it compulsory.

Election fever is going on in the country. Telangana is gearing up for elections tomorrow and elections were held in a few states earlier this month. The elections in the poll-bound states are seen as the semi-finals for the crucial Lok Sabha elections.

Amid this interesting news has come out on the nations where voting is compulsory and people casting their vote is mandatory. Not casting a vote comes with a few punishments like a fine, canceling a vote, and suspending a passport.

As per the information nations like Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, North Korea, Samoa, Singapore, Congo, Fiji, Greece, Mexico, and others have a rule which says voting is mandatory and the eligible voters should come to the booths to use their right.

Around 20 nations have this rule that makes the people visit the polling booth without a miss. If this is not followed the violators will attract cases and a fine. These factors result in a good vote percentage.

We would have seen such a rule in India as well if everything went well. Back in 2015, the Karnataka government discussed the bill that says not voting will come with a punishment. However, this was proposed for the local body polls on the lines of Gujarat. But things did not materialize.
