Starting from 'Gulabi' to 'Chandamama', Krishna Vamsi made a mark in the film industry with his brand of movies. He is struggling to find a hit in the last decade and he has now arrived with 'Rangamarthanda' which is a remake of Marathi film 'Nata Samrat'. Prakash Raj is playing the lead role in this film and let us dive into the review to know more about this film.
Story:
Raghavarao (Prakash Raj) is a theatre artist for over 40 years and did a lot of wonderful roles on stage. He receives the title 'Rangamarthanda' and after receiving it, he announces that he is quitting the stage and claims that he will do justice to roles in real life. After returning home, he writes the house in the same of his daughter-in-law and gives the rest of the money and gold to his daughter. He even marries her to the boy of her liking. Raghavarao gives everything to his family and he starts facing problems. He couldn't stay with his wife and goes to his daughter's house. He faces some problems there too. What are those problems Raghavarao faced? How his life turns out after retirement? What will he do forms the rest of the story.
Analysis:
There is a scene in 'Rangamarthanda' where Chakri (Brahmanandam) is on the hospital bed after losing everything in life. His best friend Raghavarao (Prakash Raj) asks him what the doctors said and Chakri says that it is tough to survive the night. They laugh together and slip back into the memories of acting on stage in America. With applauses in the background, they enact the Dhuryodhana and Karna's roles from Mahabharata on the stage. They try to remember all these moments and this entire sequence which is more than 10 minutes showcase what acting really means. Prakash Raj and Brahmanadam show everyone how to deliver dialogues, how to emote and how to touch your hearts. Brahmanandam's performance in this part and Prakash Raj's work makes you emotional a lot. Krishna Vamsi needs to be appreciated a lot for his execution.
Acting on stage is an outdated thing to do nowadays. People treat a guy as a mad person if he claims to make you emotional on the stage. When Krishna Vamsi decided to remake Marathi film 'Nata Samrat', Ramya Krishnan who is Krishna Vamsi's wife said that no one will watch it. But the 'Khadgam' director went ahead boldly and two producers dared to invest in it. No matter what phase of the career he is in, Krishna Vamsi always believed in his guts and made movies that he wants without listening to anyone. He did the same this time and did not care about commercial elements despite being in the worst form. He made an emotional movie with touches your heart and leaves you teary eyed.
Looking at the story, 'Rangamarthanda' is not a new story. Showcasing the lead actor as a stage artist is the only novel thing. Other than that, it is quite similar to many movies we saw before. A lot of scenes look familiar but Krishna Vamsi is very honest in his narration. The measured dialogues are the biggest highlight of this movie. The film is all about a successful man on stage who ends up as an unsuccessful man off stage. The wonderful acting by the cast members and good dialogues brings out the emotions very well. It also sheds light on where the society is heading in the name of modernisation and how we are treating out parents. There are a handful of stand out scenes in this movie and people will definitely become emotional after watching 'Rangamarthanda'. Routine story, slow narration, too much of sentiment and highly preachy at times can be termed as the film's major complaints. But 'Rangamarthanda' provides you a good experience. Make sure to watch it in theatres rather than waiting for an OTT release.
Performances:
The audience who got bored of seeing Prakash Raj in similar roles again and again will remember why he is a great actor after watching 'Rangamarthanda'. He brought back the phenomenal performer in him for this film and showcased his true potential. His acting is tremendous even though there are no huge makeovers or special makeups for him. Even in melodramatic scenes, Prakash Raj did a very natural acting and it is great to see him like this again.
The character which we will be remembering for a long time is Brahmanandam's Chakri character. He made us laugh countless times but this one of those rare films which he made everyone cry. We will not be able to forget this Brahmanadam for a long time and one wonders if he is the same person we see in memes everyday. He pulls your heartstrings in this film and Ramya Krishnan emoted with her eyes and took a very subtle approach while doing her scenes. Her look was good too. Shivathmika Rajasekhar, Rahul Sipligunj, Ali Reza, Anasuya Bharadwaj and others did their roles perfectly.
Technicians:
Knowing the movie's nature, Krishna Vamsi took the technicians who will suit it perfectly. Ilayaraja's music is pleasing and touching while his work definitely needs a mention. A song is used in parts and it was executed quite well. Ilayaraja may not be the same person has he was 2 decades back but he definitely delivered this time. Raj K Nalli's cinematography is decent and editing is fine. While Krishna Vamsi may not have been in top form but he managed to bring the best out of his team. The dialogues, music, visuals and performances have been extracted quite well. His fans can say that 'He is back' confidently though it is not his best work by miles.
