Veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan has shared an important open letter about the current situation in the Indian film industry. In his message, he spoke about the rising economic problems across the world and how they are affecting cinema production in India.

Kamal Haasan explained that the ongoing crisis in West Asia is creating pressure on fuel prices, energy, transport and trade. Because of this, production costs for films are also increasing rapidly. He said that the Indian film industry is already facing uneven recovery after difficult years, and these new problems may create more challenges for producers, distributors, theatre owners and workers.

The actor clearly mentioned that the burden of cost cutting should never fall on workers and daily wage employees. He said salaries, food, transport, accommodation, safety, and working conditions of workers should always be protected. According to him, the industry must reduce unnecessary spending instead of affecting workers who work the hardest.

Kamal Haasan also pointed out several areas where cinema budgets can be controlled. He spoke against avoidable luxury expenses, inflated entourage culture, poor planning, production delays, and unnecessary foreign travel for songs and shoots. In a striking line, he questioned why every love story should be shot in Paris and every honeymoon scene must happen in Switzerland. He said Indian cinema should have more confidence in India’s own beautiful locations.

The actor further requested producers, directors, actors, studios, OTT platforms, exhibitors, and unions to come together for an industry-wide discussion. He believes this is the right time for the entire cinema industry to work together and find practical solutions for the future.

Kamal Haasan also stressed the importance of discipline during filmmaking. He encouraged tighter schedules, reduced luxury expenses, conserving energy on sets, and reusing materials whenever possible. According to him, extravagance should not be confused with quality.

Kamal Haasan said cinema is not just entertainment because it influences millions of people every day. He urged senior members of the industry to lead by example and protect the future of Indian cinema with responsibility and discipline.
