YSR served as Health Minister when Anjaiah was the Chief Minister of AP. It was then, YSR decided to accept only One Rupee as his salary considering the dire situation of the state. Then Chief Minister had even appreciated the gesture of YSR.

After completion of MBBS in Gulbarga College, YSR begun practice in Jammalamadugu and Pulivendula. A 70-beds YS Raja Reddy Hospital was started in Pulivendula in the year 1973 for providing free medical service. He earned the name of 'One Rupee Doctor' at that phase itself. Political debut of YSR happened in 1978. YSR continued to charge only one rupee even after becoming the Minister in 1980.

NTR took 1 rupee monthly salary after getting elected as CM in 1983. In 2019, YS Jagan decided to follow his Father to lead by example.
