Ban In AP, Boon For Telangana

Update: 2019-08-17 04:48 GMT
Will the liquor ban soon to be imposed by the Andhra Pradesh Government turn into a boon for Telangana? Yes, say officials. AP excise officials say that liquor ban in AP might force tipplers and guzzlers to flock to either Yanam, which is part of Union Territory of Puducherry, or to Telangana. Several liquor contractors from AP are now vying to grab liquor permits to set up shops along AP-Telangana border in Mahbubnagar, Khammam and Nalgonda.

This means more revenue for Telangana government. The AP Government's decision to bring down the number of liquor shops from 4000 to 2000 is turning out to be a windfall for Telangana. The boozers will reach out to the border towns in Telangana for liquor . This means more money both in terms of liquor sales and also more competition to bag the contract. The liquor contracts in AP will end in October and the Telangana liquor season will begin in the same month. So, most liquor contractors from AP could come to Telangana and apply for licenses to sell liquor.

Phase-wise imposition of prohibition is one of the chief assurances that YS Jagan gave during the time of elections. This helped him in getting women's votes. But, prohibition is a bad idea economy wise, warn economists.
