A celebrity war of a different kind has begun in the country. Recently, as many as 49 film actors and celebrities have written an open letter to Prime Minister Mody claiming that the 'Jai Sriram' chant was becoming the slogan of the mob lynching. They said the country was becoming intolerant of the minorities, Dalits and other marginalised sections. Countering their argument, as many as 61 celebrities, including film stars, writers and other prominent citizens, came together in support of Modi. So, this has become a ''my celebrity vs your celebrity'' contest.
Leading the pro-Modi pack is celebrated actress Kangana Ranaut. Among those who signed with her are prominent author Prasoon Joshi, dansuesse Sonal Mansingh and film director Madhur Bhandarkar. They sought to know why the Left-leaning intellectuals were silent when innocents were being killed by terrorists and Maoists. Why were the people silent when terrorists burnt down the schools in Kashmir, they asked. They said that the country was making rapid strides under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and that it is the duty of every right thinking person to support him.
Among those who signed against Modi were Adoor Gopalakrishnan, actress Aparna Sen, historian Ramachandra Guha and Tamil director Maniratnam.
