Telangana government has recently decided to hike compensation for the farmer's suicides from Rs. 1.5 lakhs to Rs. 6 lakhs. The decision was taken after a five-hour cabinet meeting on September 20 th that discussed farmer suicide deaths and agriculture crisis in the Telangana districts
The new ex gratia would not be applicable to the families of those who committed suicide before September 19, and it triggers fresh controversy. The move has raised severe controversies as those families where farmers killed themselves before Sept 19 will get only Rs. 1.5 lakh as compensation.
The Telangana government on Thursday issued a fresh circular revising the rules on ex-gratia to the farmers who had committed suicide. As per the new order released today the farmers who had died from June 2, 2014, are likely to be benefited. Means all the farmers who had commited suicide since the state formation will get 6 lakhs as compensation.NGOs and independent surveys says that 1200 farmer suicides since June 2014.
