The recent flop show of the Indian team in South Africa's tour had raised a lot of questions on the performance of senior players and there was also demand that young players should be groomed keeping the future in mind in the place of seniors who are not performing as per the expectations.
Amid demand of bringing a big transition in the team, the cricket governing body in India Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) had reportedly decided to demote two players, media reports say.
According to the media reports, Test specialists Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara might be demoted from the BCCI Central Contracts List. As the duo was in the Grade A list earlier, they are expected to fall to Grade B.
The two players were added in 'Grade A' last year and cut to less than one year they were dragged down. Under the demotion of the Grades, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara will see a big slash in the annual pay of salaries. From Rs 5 crore which they used to get under Grade A, the player dup will be receiving Rs 3 crore.
If the information shared by a leading media outlet is to be believed, the BCCI had decided to take the harsh decision, taking their not-so-good performance on South African soil into consideration. In three Test matches, they could not surpass even the 150 mark despite playing six innings.
The two players who were instrumental in helping India retain the Border-Gavaskar could not repeat the same heroics in India's tour of South Africa. On the grounds of the same reason, BCCI took the decision reportedly and an official statement from the board is expected soon.
As India is going to have a jam-packed schedule this year with various series and the Prestigious T 20 World Cup, a few other bowlers are likely to see their Grades coming down in the contracts, while a few others are going to remain the same in the contracts.
The BCCI had contracts with players under four categories. A+ is the elite class with players receiving Rs 7 crore per year, followed by A, B, and C categories. White ball captain Rohit Sharma, former skipper Virat Kohli, and Bumrah are in Grade A+
