It is already known that the volume of the criminal activity is happening in the country have been going up consistently over the last few years and things are not looking positive whatsoever. In this context, the High Court has issued a crucial order regarding the honey trap culture in the country and let us have a look into the same.
The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh Police to take stringent action against gangs involved in honeytrap extortion, where victims are lured into compromising situations and blackmailed for money. The court described these scams as a “serious and worrying social issue” that demands immediate police attention.
The order came while hearing a plea to quash an FIR filed against one of the accused. The court refused the plea and instead instructed law enforcement to investigate these networks comprehensively.
The Inspector General of Police, Meerut Zone, has been asked to oversee the probe, and district police chiefs across the region are required to maintain heightened vigilance. Directions have also been communicated to the Director General of Police and the Additional Chief Secretary.
Honeytrap scams typically involve fraudsters establishing trust through social media or dating platforms. Once the victim is convinced, they are lured into private encounters, secretly recorded, and then threatened with exposure unless they pay money.
Victims often hesitate to report such crimes due to fear of social embarrassment, which allows these gangs to operate freely.
The court’s directive aims not only to curb the misuse of trust and intimacy for financial gain but also to alert authorities to the wider networks behind these scams. Experts say that public awareness and careful online conduct are essential to prevent falling victim to such schemes.
