This is election year and the parties are busy with the election preparation. Not just the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, a few states will face the general elections too. There are many parties in the race and the status of the parties is not the same. There are categories.

Looking at the categories: there are recognised parties, unregistered parties, regional parties, and national parties. There are a few doubts among people about the criteria for the parties to get the tag of a national party. Let us look at the required things for the tag.

As per the guidelines set up by the Election Commission, if a political party should get the status of a national party, it should field candidates in MLA or MP segments in general elections in at least four states. Well, that doesn't end there and it has to do with the votes percent and seats.

The party should get at least 6 percent out of the total vote percentage. At least four party candidates should win as MPs or else the party should have the status of a regional party in four states. Another criterion is that the party should get at least two percent of total Lok Sabha seats from three states.

As there are a few parameters for the parties to get the tagline, the election commission releases the list regularly based on this. Considering the seats and votes a party gets in the elections, they get the status of regional and national party. At regular intervals we see new parties coming and they can't get the votes that major parties get.

Under this circumstance, these parties are dubbed as recognised parties. Looking at other categories, there are National Parties, State Parties, registered parties, and Unrecognised parties.

As per the latest data, there are 6 national parties,57 state parties, and 2,764 unrecognised parties in the country. The data includes the parties across all the states and Union Territories.
