Many countries around the world are now worried about how social media is affecting children. Apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have become a daily habit for young users. While these platforms connect people and provide entertainment, they also create serious problems for children’s mental health, studies and personal growth. Because of this, several governments are planning strict rules to limit social media use by minors.

Recently, the Malaysian government announced that it is preparing to ban social media access for children under the age of 16. Malaysia’s Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government is studying the steps taken by Australia which has already brought in a similar rule. The aim is to protect children from harmful online content, cyberbullying and addiction to mobile phones.

Experts say that children who spend too much time on social media often lose focus on their education. They sleep less, avoid outdoor play, and become emotionally stressed. Many children also feel pressure from unrealistic images and trends they see online. This can affect their confidence and overall mental well-being. The Malaysian government believes that limiting access will help children enjoy a healthier and more balanced childhood.

A recent survey in Malaysia showed that around 72 percent of children are active on social media. This high number has increased concerns among parents and authorities. The government feels that strong action is needed before the problem grows further. Along with the proposed ban, Malaysia is also tightening its cyber safety rules to reduce online crimes and protect young users.

Other countries are also moving in the same direction. Nations like New Zealand, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands have started taking steps to control children’s exposure to harmful content. These measures include age verification systems, restricted content, and parental controls.
