Synopsis:
The goal of Tilak (Suriya) to become a CBI Officer gets ruined because of corrupt officials. Dejected by major setback, He himself forms a gang to conduct raids on big shots in the country by posing as a CBI Officer. A Special Cop (Karthik) will be assigned the task of nabbing the Gang Members. Mind game between the Gang and Cop forms rest of the tale.
Performances:
Suriya carries the whole film on his shoulders. He excelled, be it comedy or serious scenes. Dubbing offered by him has increased the overall impact. He should continue dubbing in Telugu.
Keerthy Suresh leaves a mark of her own despite minimal screen time. The look attempt by her for this movie is too good.
Ramyakrishna is an asset for 'Gang'. She has beautifully performed in the role essayed by Anupam Kher in 'Special 26'. The role of Karthik isn't so effective. Revathi's Husband Suresh Menon does a fine job. Anand Raj, RJ Balaji, Senthil and Sivashankar have done justice to their roles.

Music composed by Anirudh Ravichander helped the movie a lot. While Songs are refreshing, Background Score elevates the scenes very well. Camera Work by Dinesh Krishnan is superb. Along with Art Director, He succeeded in creating 80s set-up. Dialogues penned by Shashank Vennelakanti are okay. Production Values are pretty good. Though 'Gang' is a remake, Director Vignesh Sivan left a mark of his own. The way he adapted 'Special 26' to suit South Indian sensibilities and making it more entertaining is worth praising. In the process, Seriousness which was evident in the original misses a bit. Overall, The Young Filmmaker scores brownie points with the kind of command he have on the craft.
Analysis:
Few months ago, There was a proposal to remake Bollywood super hit 'Special 26' starring Akshay Kumar with Raviteja. Whereas, Massraja opined the heist thriller won't work in South Indian Language if its made as it is and necessary modification should be done for getting the desired result. Director Vignesh Sivan has done exactly the same with 'Gang'. While the Original was in a serious mode, Remake is fully entertainment-based.
Vignesh Sivan adapted 'Special 26' to suit South nativity. Though the thrill factor got lowered a bit, Changes made to the remake are quite impressive and even those who had seen the original could give it a try. The core story & key scenes shown in the original have been used nicely. Particularly, The unemployment issue in 80s is being highlighted in 'Gang'.
Actually, The Film is inspired from the real life incidents. In the 80s, A Group of Con-men looted black money from Politicians and Businessmen by posing as CBI Officers. That atmosphere has been beautifully presented in 'Gang'. Though logic goes missing at times, The manner in the Gang Members operate continues to excite and engage the viewers. Especially, First Mission of the Gang is thoroughly entertaining. The way in which Hero transforms into a conman has been presented convincingly.
The only serious sequence in 'Gang' (Death of Hero's Friend) hits the right chord with the audience. This episode is a creation of Vignesh Sivan as there was no such episode in 'Special 26'. Whereas, Second Half isn't as racy as the First Half and bit of lag is evident. Hero appointing his team by conducting interviews after issuing a paper statement on behalf of CBI looks unconvincing. Audience get the feeling that Director should have shown few more missions of the Gang. One gets the feeling that the movie has ended abruptly. Nobody knows why Vignesh Sivan ignored the twist shown in the Climax of the original. The kind of impression viewers had in the beginning gets reduced a bit by the end of the movie. Overall, 'Gang' is a thriller which you can give it a try this Weekend!
