One makes films like Akhanda, Veera Simha Reddy, and Bhagavanth Kesari, which reinforced a strong mass image. The other comes up with Godavari, Happy Days, and Kubera. Can these two worlds come together? That’s what's being discussed in film circles right now, as buzz is coming out that Sekhar Kammula and Nandamuri Balakrishna are joining hands for a film.
On paper, this doesn’t even sound like a discussion because it sounds like two completely different industries colliding. One is known for silence, subtle stories, and rooted emotions. The other thrives on elevation, power-packed dialogue, and unapologetic mass energy. However, we have to say that this makes the combination interesting. There’s talk that Sekhar Kammula has an idea where Balakrishna fights very well into the space, though he will be stepping into a completely new space. Not the usual larger-than-life template, but something more character-driven, which could result in an award-winning performance for Balakrishna.
Over the last few years, Balakrishna has locked into a strong mass zone. At the same time, Sekhar Kammula too left his kind of story-centric cinema and is trying to carve out something like Kubera. If these two are making a film, surely it needs a huge balance. If they tilt too much towards mass, it loses the novelty.
If it goes fully subtle, it risks disconnecting from Balakrishna’s core fans. But if they find that middle ground, surely it would be a terrific film.
