Union Minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari on Monday inaugurated Road Safety Month and hoped that accidents and casualties in the country will be reduced by 50 per cent before 2025. While inaugurating the first National Road Safety Month, Gadkari highlighted the government's commitment towards safety.
In his address, the minister said that "70 per cent of deaths are in the age group of 18-45 years. There is a need to save lives in India where 415 people are dying every day due to road accidents."
He also made interesting comments that 1.45 lakh Coronavirus deaths were reported in the country during the last one year, and the figures show that there were 1.51 lakh road accident deaths, which means that accident deaths are more than Covid deaths. He also said road accidents are more dangerous than the Covid pandemic. He urged all states to focus on preventing road accident deaths.
Gadkari said Tamil Nadu has reduced fatalities, with a success rate of 53 per cent. He asked the states to take Tamil Nadu as an ideal and reduce such fatalities by 50 per cent.
