The Union Cabinet has given its consent to the amendments made to the Maternity Benefits Act 1961. The proposed Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill 2016 is intended to raise the Maternity Leave from existing 12 weeks to 26 weeks.
As per Maternity Benefits Act 1961, Women Employees are entitled to take full paid leave only to take take care of their child during the Maternity period. This is applicable to any organization with10 or more employees.

Union Cabinet also approved amendments to the Factories Bill to increase employment opportunities and ease of doing business. Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya introduced Factories (Amendment) Bill 2016 in Lok Sabha to hike the limit of overtime hours of factory workers from 50 to 100. Despite a walkout by Congress and Left Parties, NDA succeeded in passing the Bill in the Lower House.
