No gunny bags, no storage facility, but TRS govt to begin paddy procurement
Will the TRS government, which has unnecessarily got into a battle of prestige with the Central Government, bungle the paddy procurement in Telangana? Indications are â yes, it could. By tamely surrendering after all the tough talking, the TRS has already lost its face. Now, it has claimed that it would buy every grain of rice. Will it really be able to buy every grain of rice?
Those who know the paddy procurement process say that the state government needs at least 15 crore gunny bags to collect the milled raw rice minus the broken rice. As of now, the government has just around 1.60 crore gunny bags. It needs an additional 13.40 crore bags. Sources say the bags would be delivered by the companies only after a month after placing the order. This only means that there would be no effective procurement for at least one month.
Meanwhile, Minister Gangula Kamalakar has pompously announced that the paddy procurement by the State Government would begin from Friday. The civil supplies officials are panicky as they are totally unprepared for the situation. According to estimates, at least 84 lakh tonnes of paddy will have to be procured.
Meanwhile, there are fears that there would be hailstorms in the last week of April and first two weeks of May. This only means that the paddy kept out in the open will be damaged and discoloured. This will cause huge losses to the farmers, say agriculture experts. On the whole, the whole exercise of paddy procurement appears to be ending up as a huge embarrassment to the ruling TRS.
